“A dental cleaning doesn't necessarily hurt. It shouldn't be painful or uncomfortable during the time. It can be uncomfortable when it's been a long period of time since you had a cleaning though. The tartar that stays underneath the gum causes an infection called periodontal disease and it can cause the gums to be sore, tender and bleed. When you come for your normal cleanings, usually the first one, if it's been a long time, can be some discomfort, but usually we can mitigate that by going slow or using anesthesia or things like that. And generally when you come back for your follow-up appointments, it's easy and there's no pain or discomfort at all.
