Quick Answer

While sensitivity can sometimes indicate a cavity that needs a dentist's attention, it is frequently caused by root exposure from receding gums. We can address this during your routine teeth cleaning using professional topical applications to block the exposed pathways.

Question: Why are my teeth sensitive to cold?

“Why are my teeth so sensitive to cold? Can a dental hygienist fix it? There's lots of different reasons why you could be sensitive to cold. Obviously, one of them could be cavities, which may need to be addressed by a dentist, but definitely there's lots of things that we can do as a dental hygienist.

A lot of times your sensitivity comes from root exposure, so from the gum receding a bit, and when the root is shown, it allows the sensitivity to go through the tooth and gives you that jolt. We can use sensitivity toothpaste, like Sensodyne or PreviDent 5000, and as well we can use some topical applications at the office like Duraflor and Crystal, which can help to block those tubes as well.

The important thing is when you're brushing with a sensitivity toothpaste, you want to make sure that you're brushing good and then spitting and leaving the toothpaste in your mouth, and you don't want to rinse for half an hour after to get the full effect. Yes. During your routine teeth cleaning, Amber-Lee can apply professional desensitizing products that block the exposed pathways on root surfaces, which often reduces sensitivity to cold.

If cold sensitivity is sharp, localized, or comes with a visible hole or cracked tooth, it may be a cavity or fracture that needs a dentist's restorative care. We can assess and refer you promptly.
